Classes begin Tuesday, September 2, 2025

Tap 1

Ages 6-9

Perfect for young beginners.  Students will learn and build upon basic tap dance vocabulary and explore a variety of movement patterns and combinations.  Students will work on strengthening their balance, coordination, and musicality in a fun, collaborative environment.

Tuesdays, 7:00-7:30pm

​Tap 2

Ages 7-12

Prerequisite:  completion of Intro To Tap for Kids, Tap 1, or permission of the instructor

Perfect for beginners or young dancers with up to 1 year of previous tap dance experience.  Students will review and build upon basic tap dance vocabulary and explore a variety of movement patterns and combinations.  Students will work on strengthening their balance, coordination, and musicality in a fun, collaborative environment.

Tap 3

Ages 9-13

Prerequisite:  completion of Tap 2 or permission of the instructor

Tap 3 students will focus on strengthening endurance and perfecting tap dance technique, while continuing to expand knowledge of tap dance vocabulary.  Students will learn about important tap dance artists and enjoy experimenting with improvisation.

Tap 4

Ages 10-13

Prerequisite:  completion of Tap 3 or permission of the instructor

Tap 4 students will perfect drills designed to improve endurance and strengthen tap dance technique, while continuing to expand knowledge of tap dance vocabulary.  Students will become more comfortable with improvisation ideas and expand their knowledge of important tap dance artists and their impact on the art form.

Tap 5

Ages 11-14

Prerequisite: completion of Tap 4 or permission of the instructor

Students will focus on building a solid technical foundation with emphasis on articulation of the feet, clarity of sound, and an understanding of basic music theory.  Class activities will include improvisation exercises and rhythmic progressions designed to improve memory recall and endurance.

Thursdays, 6:30-7:30pm

Tap 6

Ages 12-15

Prerequisite:  completion of Tap 5 or permission of the instructor

Building upon skills learned in Tap 5, students will place more emphasis on spacial awareness: weight shifts, floor connection, and relaxation.  Students will work within a variety of rhythmic feels, incorporating dynamics, while improving their clarity of sound.

Thursdays, 5:30-6:30pm

Tap 7

Ages 12-15

Prerequisite:  completion of Tap 6 or permission of the instructor

Students will use their previous experience to dive deeper into the performance aspects of tap dance while studying historical routines that are practiced and performed worldwide today. Students will have a greater understanding of timing, space, and overall expression through tap dance. 

​

Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30pm

Tap 8

Ages 13-16

Prerequisite:  completion of Tap 7 or permission of the instructor

Students in this level use their knowledge of tap dance to build intricate rhythm patterns and improvisational ideas, while building confidence in performance technique. Students will continue to study music theory; having a working knowledge of different rhythmic feels, polyrhythms, and syncopation.

Tuesdays, 4:30-5:30pm

Tap 9

Ages 14-18

Prerequisite:  completion of Tap 8 or permission of the instructor

Students must demonstrate excellent technique, musicality, and presentation. Students will continue to study music theory; having a working knowledge of different rhythmic feels, polyrhythms, and syncopation. Tap 9 students will work through a variety of improvisational ideas to develop their own sense of individuality in performance and study contemporary artists of the form.

Advanced/Professional Tap

Ages 16+

This high-level class is designed for experienced dancers seeking to expand their rhythmic vocabulary and push the boundaries of musicality and performance. Emphasizing precision, dynamics, and clarity, the class explores complex combinations, intricate footwork, and advanced improvisational structures. Dancers will work on mastering challenging choreography, varying time signatures, and nuanced phrasing, all while developing their individual artistic voice.  Ideal for advanced and professional dancers, this class offers a rigorous and inspiring environment that cultivates technical excellence, musical sophistication, and creative exploration.

Teen/Adult Tap Classes at St. Louis Academy of Dance

Teen/Adult Beginning Tap

Did you learn to tap dance when you were younger and want to get back to it?  This class is perfect for you! STL Rhythm Collaborative instructors will introduce the basics of tap dance in a safe and supportive environment; focusing on building vocabulary, improving balance and coordination, and enhancing musicality.

​

Wednesdays, 7:30-8:30pm

​

Teen/Adult Intermediate Tap

Strengthen balance, stability, and footwork while honing tap dance skills in a comfortable, fun environment. Class exercises and combinations, led by STL Rhythm Collaborative instructors, will focus on strengthening musicality while building both your tap dance and music vocabulary. This level is recommended for students with at least 5+ years of previous tap dance training.

Thursdays, 7:30-8:30pm

​

Teen/Adult Intermediate/Advanced Tap

Recommended for students with at least 7 or more years of previous tap dance training.  In this fast-paced class, STL Rhythm Collaborative instructors will offer methods for improved speed, timing, musicality, and articulation of the foot/ankle. In addition to footwork and presentation, classwork will also include discussion of past and present tap dance artists/masters and the practice of their contributions to the form.

Mini Tap

Ages 6-8

Tuesdays, 6:45-7:30pm

Perfect for beginners or young dancers with some previous tap dance experience.  Students will review and build upon basic tap dance vocabulary and explore a variety of movement patterns and combinations.  Students will work on strengthening their balance, coordination, and musicality in a fun, collaborative environment

Junior Tap

Ages 9-11

Tuesdays, 7:30-8:15pm

Junior students will focus on strengthening endurance and perfecting tap dance technique, while continuing to expand knowledge of tap dance vocabulary.  Technique activities in this level aim to improve articulation of the feet, balance, and connection to the floor through weight shift exercises. Students will learn about important tap dance artists and enjoy experimenting with improvisation.

 

Teen/Senior Tap

Ages 12+

Tuesdays, 8:15-9:00pm

Teen/Senior students will perfect drills designed to improve endurance and strengthen tap dance technique, while continuing to expand knowledge of tap dance vocabulary.  Students will become more comfortable with improvisation ideas and expand their knowledge of important tap dance artists, past and present, and their impact on the art of tap dance.
